Update: May Sample Challenge!

My sample stash!

Hello! You may remember my self-appointed challenge for the month of May, to use up as many of my beauty samples as I possibly could. You can read about it in this May: Month Of Samples post. Well, I took on the challenge, and I'm here to report the results!

This was a fun venture and I did manage to find some great products within the huge box of samples. There was no way I was ever going to get through all of them, but I made a nice dent in my collection. I'm going to continue working my way through the samples, just not as intensely as I did during this challenge. I'll list all the beauty samples I finished and give my thoughts on the ones that were noteworthy!

All the samples I got through in May!

  1. Tigi Bedhead Recharge Shampoo
  2. Bobbi Brown EXTRA Eye Repair Cream ~ I liked it and will keep the little container for de-potting sample sachets into.
  3. Chanel Le Volume Ultra-Noir Mascara ~ this made for clumpy lashes, but I'm not sure if it was due to the brush within the mini-sized sample, or the formula.
  4. Clinique Foaming Sonic Facial Soap
  5. Banila Co Mineral Salt Clay Pack
  6. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair ~ I've tried this before and really enjoy it.
  7. L'Oreal Revitalift Laser X3 ~ I'm not a fan. It seems like a primer and didn't sit right on my skin.
  8. John Frieda Full Body Shampoo
  9. La Roche-Posay Lipid-Replenishing Body Balm ~ didn't love it.
  10. Kora Organics Hydrating Day And Night Cream ~ smells earthy, is OK.
  11. VDL Naked Cleansing Oil Cream ~ felt nice rubbing it around my face, but was a hassle removing it. Also, it didn't entirely remove my makeup.
  12. Clinique Sculptwear Lift And Contour Serum For Face And Neck ~ I went through 7 sachets of this (received a week's supply). This has a lightweight, almost gel-like consistency. I love how it feels and the results. Would consider buying.
  13. Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser ~ strong smell and not my cup of tea.
  14. Too Faced Shadow Insurance ~ really good. Eyeshadow colour was intensified and didn't budge all day. I would consider buying.
  15. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment ~ this is green and smells quite strongly! It says you may experience tingling, but my skin actually hurt. However, my skin was so smooth afterwards and wasn't red or irritated.
  16. ASAP Anti-Ageing Night Cream ~ this is more like a gel and smells lovely, but didn't absorb properly and just 'sat' on my skin. I ended up using it as a hand cream to get rid of it.
  17. Indeed Labs Hydraluron Moisture Boosting Serum
  18. L'Oreal Revitalift Day Cream ~ did the job.
  19. Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream ~ I like it. I've liked every Bobbi Brown cream I've tried.
  20. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Foam
  21. Dermalogica Clear Start Emergency Spot Fix ~ not a bad treatment, didn't blow my socks off.
  22. La Prairie Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster ~ absolutely love it as I do all La Prairie products. If only it wasn't so expensive!
  23. Sephora Lagoon Creamy Body Wash ~ kind of fun but difficult to get out of the little round thing!
  24. Sunday Riley Start Over ~ really good, liked the results.
  25. Ren Keep Young And Beautiful Firming And Smoothing Serum ~ weird earthy smell, lovely and gentle but hard to tell if effective due to the amount given.
  26. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ~ OMG, I love this! It really improved the look of my skin. I'm definitely considering buying this.
  27. Philosophy Renewed Hope In A Jar Eye ~ I liked this and was happy with its performance.
  28. Chanel La Solution IO Sensitive Skin Cream ~ this was OK, nothing to write home about. It was gentle and non-irritating.
  29. Kate Somerville Cytocell Dark Circle Corrective Eye Cream ~ my dark circles were reduced but it didn't have enough moisturising properties for my liking.
  30. Malin + Goetz Facial Cleansing Oil ~ these oils aren't for me. It did remove my makeup but I'm just not into this method.
  31. Estee Lauder Flawless Start Instant Perfecting Primer ~ I really like it. It improves the staying power of makeup and provides a great base for foundation.
  32. Perricone MD Advanced Eye Area Therapy ~ I love love love this. I got amazing results and will probably buy it.
The best of my samples in my opinion!

So there were five products that were outright winners for me, that I'd consider buying:
Perricone MD Advanced Eye Area Therapy, SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, La Prairie Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster, Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Clinique Sculptwear Lift And Contour Serum for Face And Neck.

I still have all these samples to go!

April Goals Summary + May: A Month of Samples!

It's May already! A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month, no returns. Let's see how I did with my April Goals ......

Neighbourhood cat 'Panda' :)

Write A Media Kit ~ NO
I feel, at this point, I will never get this done. Every spare minute I get to spend on my blog is used writing posts or taking and editing photos. Not to mention advertising posts, otherwise what's the point of writing them? I'm losing hope, but I want this done and out of the way.

Clean Out MakeUp Organiser ~ YES!
So proud! My makeup organiser looks so much better and I can find products toot sweet. Thank you, self!

Join Affiliate Programs ~ NO
See above explanation for why I didn't get my Media Kit done. Sad face!

Get Quotes For Bathroom Renovation ~ YES!
This was an arduous yet necessary process that sucked from start to finish, but it's done. On to the next step. Yay! (That was a sarcastic yay).

SUMMARY - I accomplished two out of four set goals, so either the glass is half full or half empty, depending on the way you look at it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have something exciting planned for May! I'm easily excited, so keep that in mind as I introduce...
MAY: A MONTH OF SAMPLES!
You know how I'm always collecting free samples? Check out past posts A Spot Of Shopping and Free Samples? You Beauty! for proof. Well, guess what? They build up!
I've set myself a challenge! In May, I'll be working my way through this massive lot of sample sachets and mini-sized products, trying to use up as many as I can. Fingers crossed my skin doesn't break out from the influx of different brands I'll be slapping on it. I'll be making notes along the way to keep track of which samples may be worth picking up in the full size, and will report back in a future blog post on those products that blew my mind with their sheer awesomeness!
Wish me luck!
April Goals!
I'm still amazed I managed to snap this!
How can it be April already? This is nuts! I haven't blogged any monthly goals since my New Year's Resolutions so let's have a quick look back at those and see if I'm actually accomplishing anything this year!
Checking In With My New Year's Resolutions!!
1. Look after myself better ~ YES AND NO. I'm getting more sleep and drinking way more water, but I'm still on the Pepsi Max and only eating healthy sometimes.
2. Learn to cook healthy recipes ~ NOPE. I haven't done this at all. :/
3. Spend more time blogging ~ YES! I'm definitely winning here. I'm putting way more time into blogging, hosting more giveaways and just doing a lot more bloggy stuff in general.
4. Step out of my comfort zone! ~ HELL YES! I went to my first ever blogging event ffs (it was the Bloggers United Adelaide Event and it was fantastic, so I'm very happy I pushed myself to go). And I went to a Beauty Bloggers meet-up by myself, not knowing anyone there. This is huge for me.
5. Watch more TV shows/Netflix ~ NO. I haven't really had much free time due to excess blogging lol.
6. Be more organised ~ YES. I wrote down when all my gift cards expire. I'm a third of the way through cleaning out my makeup organiser and I finally catalogued every goodie bag product from the Bloggers United Event. I'm using two Diaries (one personal and one for blogging) and I have yet to take my son to school on a Pupil Free Day like I did last year! #winning *Edit - Today I took my son to school in uniform and it was Casual Day. I thought it was tomorrow. I went home, collected casual clothes and returned to school, but still. Maybe #notsowinning*
So far I'm scoring 3.5/6 and I've still got time to accomplish the rest!
April Goals
Write A Media Kit
I've been meaning to do this for the longest time, but never get around to it! There's always something new to do blog-wise, whether it be photograph products, write posts, answer emails, advertise posts, post on Instagram, catalogue products, plan monthly posts, keep track of brands I'm working with, the list goes on! Enough is enough. I'm giving myself a whole month to get this the crap done, once and for all.
Clean Out MakeUp Organiser
Another job I never seem to get around to, except unbelievably, I actually started this the other day! I've emptied out a few compartments, cleaned them out and only put back in products I'm currently using. I already feel SO much more organised, now just to keep the momentum up and finish the whole thing!
Join Affiliate Programs
I tried this once before and didn't gain anything from it, but want to give it another go. I need to work out which ones will best suit my blog and go about setting it up. I should stop seeing this as a mile-high hurdle, and just work it out and get it done. Because I really love the look of those affiliate ads on the sides of other beauty blogs!
Get Quotes for Bathroom Renovation
This bathroom situation has been the most drawn-out, arduous process ever, and now that the ball's finally in our court (instead of our Insurance company's), I haven't gotten around to organising quotes. Ideally, I want it over and done with in one day, because I'm sure three different bathroom companies will love being here simultaneously lol. I need to stop putting everything in the 'too hard' basket, and actually Get Shit Done.
New Year's Resolutions!
Happy New Year! I hope you're all having lovely holidays, with lots of time to relax and hang with family and friends. Did you go crazy in the Boxing Day sales? All of my shopping was done online because I'm lazy and hate crowds! I got some beauty products from Mecca, some stuff for hubby's upcoming Birthday from ABC Shop and I bought a couple of tops, but that was with a $100 gift card I won, so it doesn't even count! I wanted some Rose Jam shower gel and Lord of Misrule shower cream from Lush but nearly everything in their Sale section was out of stock by the time I got online. Update - I went to the Marion store yesterday and they still had some 50% off Sale stock left! I'll be writing a post on my Boxing Day Hauls next week.
Anyhoo, onto my monthly goals! Let's see how I did with my December Goals.
December Goals
  1. Eat healthier in general (except Christmas Day) ~ Yes & No. Yes up to Christmas, mainly no after Christmas. LOL
  2. Drink more water ~ YES
  3. Clear and clean my desk (minimalism!) ~ No, it still looks like a bomb hit it.
  4. Don't get overwhelmed by comps and/or feel the need to enter every single Christmas Countdown competition! (compers will get this one) ~ No. I got completely overwhelmed pretty much straight away!
  5. Clear and clean makeup organiser and toss unused/old products ~ No :(
Summary: 1/5. Not going to lie, that's a pretty piss poor effort.
No January goals this time, because I've been formulating my New Year's Resolutions instead.
New Year's Resolutions
1. Look after myself better
Exercise more, eat healthier food, drink more water and try to kick the Coke Zero/Pepsi Max habit! Keep track of my weight in a spreadsheet. Switch to washing my hair twice a week. My skincare routine is on point at the moment, so keep that up. Oh and get more sleep!
2. Learn to cook healthy recipes
There's no excuse for this! I'm basically stuck in a rut of cooking meals I know how to cook (like spaghetti bolognese) but that aren't particularly healthy, just because it's easy. I have a heap of cookbooks (including healthy ones) and a ton of recipes I've cut out of magazines over the years. Time to look through and find some fairly easy healthy meals to make, and actually change my family's eating habits for the better!
3. Spend more time blogging
Sadly, this will mean less comping, because somethings gotta give. I'd really like to publish 10 posts each month. I need to plan my posts out and know when each one goes live and be consistent. I also want to run more giveaways this year!
4. Step out of my comfort zone!
This will take some doing, but I want to push myself to do things I normally wouldn't. Actually attend blogger events and stop saying no to everything. Network, meet new people and socialise more. Super hard for an introvert, but a change that might be good for me.
5. Watch more TV shows/Netflix
There are so many shows I'm behind on, like seasons behind. I need to catch up on Orange is the New Black, Girls, Please Like Me, The Mindy Project, House of Cards, Elementary and Offspring to name a few. Plus there are newer shows I want to check out like Wet Hot American Summer, Master of None and Jessica Jones. I want to engage in some serious binge-watching!
6. Be more organised
Set certain days for particular housework tasks, plan ahead with my blog posts (ties into number 3) and if I buy Take 5 and That's Life magazines, ensure I get my entries in on time! Look in my Diary every morning and know what's happening that day. Don't wait until the last day of the month to achieve my monthly goals (lol I do this all the time) and don't wait until the end of each month to check the expiry date of gift cards and offers either (ugh, don't ask - let's just say I'm an expert at the last minute shop dash to use cards that expire that day). For God's sake, start being an adult!
Don't forget to enter my Fizzy Bath Bombs Giveaway, as it ends in a couple of days!
December Goals!
Left: Kikki K A5 Weekly Diary Sweet, Right: Typo Chase Adventure Premium Diary
Can you believe it's December!? I've done zero Christmas shopping so far, and will no doubt leave it until the last minute as usual. In terms of goals, results were not optimal, to say the least. I did do a massive clean-up around the house though, I just didn't get around to my desk or my makeup organiser. Despite this, most rooms are looking quite good now, and I'm feeling a lot more organised! Here's how I did with my November Goals...
  1. Publish at least 10 blog posts again ~ NO (8 is close though).
  2. Create a Beauty Spreadsheet listing staples with prices and dates ~ YES (well, I've started)
  3. Finally change to my married name! ~ NO (this will take a lot of preparation)
  4. Clean out and re-organise cutlery drawer ~ YES! So. Much. Better.
  5. Set up regular online grocery shopping and home delivery ~ NO
  6. First-time watch 7 movies ~ NO. I only first-time watched 4 (Horrible Bosses 2, Dumb And Dumber To, Spy, Skyfall)
  7. Clean out and re-organise makeup organiser ~ NO (but I did clean up the entire bedroom)
  8. Clear and clean my desk ~ NO (but the kitchen is 95% done now!)
  9. Be awesome (sorry, I wanted an easy one!) LOLOL ~ YES, obviously! (joking)
  10. Buy a 2016 Diary! ~ YES! One for my blog and one for everything else.
RESULT - 4/10 and a lot of excuses.
OK, so December will be mega-busy, with builders working on our house, presents to buy, a shit-ton of Christmas comps to enter each day plus blogging, so I'll be realistic and halve my Goals.
December Goals
  1. Eat healthier in general (except Christmas Day)
  2. Drink more water
  3. Clear and clean my desk (minimalism!)
  4. Don't get overwhelmed by comps and/or feel the need to enter every single Christmas Countdown competition! (compers will get this one)
November Goals!
Look, it's the Organic Coconut Chips from the Native Box sprinkled on top!
Look how well I did with my October Goals! It was a struggle to write 10 blog posts and I still haven't bought new clothes, but overall, a successful month!
  • Publish at least 10 blog posts ~ YES!
  • Remove makeup and stick to a strict skincare routine every night ~ YES!
  • De-clutter emails by unsubscribing from as many unnecessary email lists as possible ~ YES!
  • Go out for a walk every weekday for at least 30 minutes ~ NO :(
  • Empty and clean the second Linenpress ~ YES! Finally completed on 25 October!
  • Finally set my overdue Doctor's appointment for a Pap Smear and just get it over with ~ YES. Suffered through it on 22 October.
  • Bake a Banana Cake and make Cream Cheese Icing for it! ~ YES! See the above photo
  • First-time watch 5 movies! ~ YES! (watched Pixels, Minions, Jupiter Ascending, The Way Way Back, Interstellar. Check out my review post here: Max My Movies - October Wrap-Up!)
  • Go through boxes and throw out as much rubbish as possible ~ YES
  • Buy new clothes! ~ Still NO :(
I achieved 8/10 of my October Goals! It really was the month for getting stuff done, and I hope to continue that trend with my November Goals. I still can't manage to exercise daily (apart from the school run) but at least I'm taking my makeup off every night without fail. This has become second nature now, something I'm very pleased with. My banana cake sank in the middle (booo!) but was still delicious-tasting and the actual cake itself was well-cooked, despite being concave. Here is the recipe I used from the Taste website, in case you're interested. And now for my...
October Goals!
Two camels we met at the Hahndorf Farm Barn during our recent break!
Well, I'm back from a week in Hahndorf, and I'm pleased to say I didn't lose my mind during my crazy-busy September (read A Quick Update for the lowdown)! I didn't set any Goals last month, so it's time to start afresh with my October ones.....
  • Publish at least 10 blog posts
  • Remove makeup and stick to a strict skincare routine every night
  • De-clutter emails by unsubscribing from as many unnecessary email lists as possible
  • Go out for a walk every weekday for at least 30 minutes
My August Goals Revisited!
Welcome to the first day of Spring! Also, a pinch and a punch for the first day of the month. No returns. Time to revisit my August Goals and let you know how I went.
  • Clear out the entire Linenpress, ready for the Builder ~ NO (but now he doesn't need access through the Linenpress until after he's re-tiled the shower, so it's less of a priority)
  • Go to bed by 11pm Sunday to Thursday nights! ~ NO (sometimes, but not more than half the time)
  • Buy new jeans and long-sleeved tops ~ NO (this is long overdue)
  • First-time watch five movies ~ YES! 1. Trainwreck 2. Ant-Man 3. John Dies At The End 4. Jack The Giant Slayer 5. Big Hero 6
  • Cook five new dishes from recipes ~ YES! 1. Low Carb Cashew Chicken 2. Sausage and Baby Spinach Pasta 3. Shepherd's Pie with Sweet Potato 4. Baked Potatoes with Bacon, Chives and Tasty Cheese (pictured above) 5. Orange Chicken with Mint and Coriander
  • Find a cat (or any animal that's safe to pat) and pat it! ~ YES! Patted a dog on 10th of August!
  • Walk 5000 FitBit steps every weekday ~ NO (only maybe 30% of the time did I achieve this)
  • Cut and colour my hair ~ NO
  • Compile recipe printouts and cutouts into a folder ~ YES! Hooray!
  • Clear and clean my desk ~ NO
You'll be glad to know I did all the fun things and pretty much avoided all the un-fun stuff! I planned on clearing my desk on the last day of August, but to be honest, I just would've moved everything from my desk to somewhere else, so I'll leave it 'til I have time to actually clean, clear and throw some stuff out. If you want to see more photos of the dishes I cooked, check out Wordless Wednesday: Cooking Up A Storm!
TOTAL - 4/10
I'm going to be very busy this month (if you missed all the shit that's going down, check out A Quick Update!) so I'm not setting any goals for September. I just want to still have my sanity come October 1.
August Goals!
One Pan Pasta Caprese!
I don't want to make excuses, but here are three. I've had a really busy month, I was stressed about my Dad having another operation (he's fine now) and, well, I'm lazy.
These were my July Goals:
  • Create spreadsheet for beauty staples with dates, stockists and best prices ~ NO
  • Dine at a restaurant I've never been to before! ~ YES! We went to Burger Foundry (see foodie pics here), From Orient, La Boca Bar & Grill (see photo in my Just Desserts post) and Borsa Pasta Cucina.
  • Clear/clean a second kitchen bench-top (whole kitchen goal was too ambitious) ~ Hahaha (NO)
  • Set up a Letterboxd account and make some movie lists! ~ YES! Here's my profile if you're interested!
  • Publish 10 blog posts in July! ~ YES!
  • Make a new (never cooked before) dish every Wednesday, from a recipe ~ NO (I only managed one new recipe, One Pan Pasta Caprese, photo above)
  • Read one book (something better than Puberty Blues) ~ NO
  • Find and pat a cat! ~ NO! Where were all the cats in July?
  • Exercise for 30 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday ~ NO, but I did do over 20,000 steps one day, thanks to excessive walking during our City Break.
  • Shopping Spree! Buy new jeans and long-sleeved tops ~ NO
Summary - 3/10 Oh dear!
Must be too cold outside for my neighbourhood kitty friend. Long time, no see!
Let's hope I fare a bit better with my August Goals......
  • Clear out the entire Linenpress, ready for the Builder
  • Go to bed by 11pm Sunday to Thursday nights!
  • Buy new jeans and long-sleeved tops
  • First-time watch five movies
July Goals!
May I interest you in a pat, neighbourhood kitty?
Last month I posted my first ever monthly goal post, June Goals. The idea, for me anyway, is to use the monthly goal list to accomplish larger or more complicated tasks, as opposed to the easier to achieve items on my daily To Do list. I like this idea, because I'm held accountable when I know my plans are immortalised on the blog. I was especially conscious of speed-completing a few June goals in the last few days of the month! Here's how I went...
  • Create spreadsheet for beauty staples with dates, stockists and best prices ~ NOPE
  • Plant bulbs in front garden (or pay someone else to do it) ~ YES! Did it ourselves on 27th June with absolutely no gardening experience.
  • Get kitchen totally clean including fridge clear-out and cupboards re-organised ~ HAHAHA NO. Cleaned one bench-top, though.
  • Sort through entire makeup collection and toss, store or give away items accordingly ~ NO, but I've started
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes every weekday (doesn't include school drop-off and pick-up walks!) ~ NO :(
  • Dine at a restaurant I've never been to before!  ~ NO
  • Read a book. Do not give up on your GoodReads Book Challenge! ~ YES! Read Puberty Blues and hated every word of it.
  • Book an appointment to get the flu injection ~ YES (jabbed on June 30, lol).
  • Find your goddamn purple jumper. You can do it! ~ YES (in true last minute style on June 30).
  • Watch five movies (cinema, DVD or Netflix) ~ YES! I saw Kingsman: The Secret Service, Madagascar, The Great Gatsby, Cats & Dogs and Inside Out.
Summary - 5/10 with two goals in progress.
And now for my July Goals!
  • Create spreadsheet for beauty staples with dates, stockists and best prices
  • Dine at a restaurant I've never been to before!
  • Clear/clean a second kitchen bench-top (whole kitchen goal was too ambitious)
  • Set up a Letterboxd account and make some movie lists!
  • Publish 10 blog posts in July!
  • Make a new (never cooked before) dish every Wednesday, from a recipe.
  • Read one book (something better than Puberty Blues)
  • Find and pat a cat!
  • Exercise for 30 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Shopping Spree! Buy new jeans and long-sleeved tops
June Goals
I plan to read this in June!
I've read monthly goal posts on a few different blogs now, and in my effort to become more organised, I've decided to set my own. I'm good at crossing items off my daily To Do list, however the 'bigger picture' often escapes my thoughts. So here goes nothing with my June Goals. I'm interested to see how many I achieve!
  • Create spreadsheet for beauty staples with dates, stockists and best prices
  • Plant bulbs in front garden (or pay someone else to do it)
  • Get kitchen totally clean including fridge clear-out and cupboards re-organised
  • Sort through entire makeup collection and toss, store or give away items accordingly
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes every weekday (doesn't include school drop-off and pick-up walks!)
  • Dine at a restaurant I've never been to before!
  • Read a book. Do not give up on your GoodReads Book Challenge!
  • Book an appointment to get the flu injection
  • Find your goddamn purple jumper. You can do it!
  • Watch five movies (cinema, DVD or Netflix)
