Netflix Recommendation: After Life

Hi guys! I haven't blogged a Netflix recommendation in what seems like ages, so I thought it was about time! On Friday night we watched The Graham Norton Show, and one of the guests was Ricky Gervais. I'm already a fan of his work, so when I heard he was promoting his new show After Life, I knew I had to check it out. Well I started watching it on Netflix with my husband on Saturday and we had finished the whole series by Sunday. Quite easy to do considering there are only six episodes, each with a run time of between 25 to 30 minutes.

AFTER LIFE
Starring: Ricky Gervais, Tom Basden, Ashley Jensen, Dame Penelope Wilton
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Country: United Kingdom
Writer: Ricky Gervais

After Life tells the story of Tony (Ricky Gervais), who is severely depressed after his wife Lisa dies of breast cancer. She was his soul mate, and he can't see a reason to carry on without her. Tony starts saying and doing whatever he wants, because what's the worst that can happen? He seriously is living in the land of zero fucks, and suicide is never far from his mind. Now if all this sounds depressing, I'm not going to lie, it is. This is a show that's sad and depressing, yet hilariously funny at the same time. I was on such an emotional rollercoaster, laughing and crying throughout every episode.

I saw a tweet that said the accompanying music choices were uninspired, obvious and boring. And to that I say, meh, whatever. Twitter is a harsh place. I loved this series. It made me think, it touched me, it had me crying so hard my throat hurt, but at the same time it made me grateful for my own personal relationships, and most of all, it moved me.

Ricky Gervais created, produced, directed and stars in this beauty, and yet again he shows his comedic genius. I would highly recommend giving After Life a go, you won't regret it.

  3. I actually HATE Ricky Gervais, with a passion that is highly irrational. I've never even really seen him in anything. I'm the same re the guy who's in Doc Martin. Anyhoo, having said that I like the premise of the show so perhaps I'll give it a try!

  11. Whilst not a fan of Ricky Gervais, my husband and I watched episode one yesterday and as they are short we will continue we think. There is not much at all on Netflix that my husband watches that I like, so finding one is a good thing!
